Print this article

Almost everyone will need to use a step ladder at some stage, whether it is to change a light bulb, paint a wall or clean a gutter. Although useful, they do pose risks if not used carefully. Our experts have compiled this handy guide to safe step ladder use.

Step 1

Fully Open & Unbroken

Fully Open & Unbroken

Always ensure the step ladder is fully open. Check that the two hinged metal braces are fully open and straight. Never use a ladder that is broken, damaged or bent.

Step 2

One at a Time

One at a Time

Only one person should use a step ladder at any one time.

Step 3

Engage Locks

Engage Locks

Before using a step ladder engage all the locks and check they are secure.

Step 4

Secure Footing

Secure Footing

Step ladders should only be used on flat, solid ground. Avoid over reaching as this may cause the footing to become unbalanced and tip the ladder. It is always better to move the ladder than to over reach. Never straddle a stepladder.

Step 5

Electrical Cables

Electrical Cables

Always be aware of where you place a ladder. Be careful not to accidently place the ladder on an electrical cable, this will damage the insulation on the cable and it could possibly electrify the ladder.
