How to Fit a Peephole in a Door

Print this article

Fitting a peephole in your front door is a great way to boost your home security. It will allow you to check who is at the door before opening it, reducing the risk of an unwanted guest. Our step by step guide will help you easily fit a peephole.

Step 1

Gather Pieces

Gather Pieces

Peepholes come in two parts. The part with the lens faces outwards.

Step 2

Drill Hole

Choose a position for the peephole, considering the average height of a person (5ft 7”) and the height of those who will be opening the door and using the peephole. Mark this position with a pencil and drill a mounting hole there using a drill bit that is a fraction larger than the peephole. To avoid splintering the door, drill very slowly and stop just as the drill bit breaks through the surface at the far side of the door, then drill through from the other side.

Step 3

Sand the Hole

Sand the hole on both sides to leave a smooth finish.

Insert the two halves and screw the barrel of the peephole together firmly by hand. Use a wide screwdriver or the back of a kitchen knife to tighten the peephole fully.
